Filippo Ganna (Netcompany Ineos) was head and shoulders above the rest of the Giro d'Italia field on stage 10's individual time trial from Viareggio to Massa. The Italian powerhouse averaged 54.9kmph for the 42km route – the longest TT in a Grand Tour for over a decade. His Netcompany Ineos' teammate Thymen Arensman was the best GC rider, coming in second on the day, 01:54 behind Ganna. Third on the stage was Rémi Cavagna (Groupama-FDJ United) who was the only other rider within two minutes of Ganna.
One of the principal narratives before the stage was whether Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain Victorious) would be able to hold onto the maglia rosa - he started the day with a gap of 02:24 to Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike). However, Vingegaard underperformed on the day, finishing 03:00 behind Ganna. Eulálio himself lost 04:57 to Ganna (01:57 to Vingegaard) so holds onto the pink jersey.
Alongside Arensman, the GC riders who will have been happy with their rides were Derek Gee (Lidl-Trek), Ben O'Connor (Jayco Alula) and Michael Storer (Tudor Procycling).
Whereas Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM Team) struggled and lost a large chunk of the time he gained over the recent mountain stages to the other podium contenders.
Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe's Jai Hindley and Giulio Pellizzari also had disappointing time trials, both losing time to their top-five rivals. There were reports of illness in the Red Bull camp.
