Marco Pantani – probably the most mythic figure of cycling ever. A human of great courage. A rider of mystical panache. A figure of terrible tragedy.

I captured the photograph in the epic but still humble bicycle workshop in Lucca, Toscana, one of the true heartlands of cycling.

Biciclette Poli is a place of cycling history, and the tiny sticker of Marco Pantani on the front door window of the store, with its many cracks, was for me the perfect image of one of the men of cycling that I admire the most. The winner. The human. The tragedy.
