The bicycles that carry the professionals around the biggest races on the calendar

Words: Rachel Jary

We’ve all scoured the Instagrams of WorldTour riders, drooling at the top-of-the-range bikes they are handed season after season with glistening paintwork and shiny componentry. Rouleur Live 2022 is a chance to get up close and personal with these stunning pieces of machinery, as the likes of Canyon, Cervélo, BMC, Pinarello and more exhibit some of the finest bikes in their ranges.

From the newest lightweight bikes that have been seen storming up the mountains of the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes, to the aero bikes that have given riders the edge in bunch sprints, to bikes robust and compliant enough to support their owners in the toughest cobbled Classics, there’s plenty to see from seven of the world’s leading bike manufacturers. Read on for a full list of the WorldTour bike brands exhibiting in London at Rouleur Live from the November 3-5.

Pinarello

Pinarello is a brand which needs little introduction. Ridden by the famed British WorldTour team Ineos Grenadiers (formerly Team Sky), Pinarello bikes have long sat at the very pinnacle of the sport. This year alone, Pinarello bikes have helped the Grenadiers to a victory in the Hell of the North when Dylan van Baarle stormed to a solo win aboard his Pinarello Dogma F in the fastest edition of the race in history, as well as multiple Grand Tour stage wins. Soon, the Italian time trialling giant, Filippo Ganna, will attempt the UCI Hour Record aboard a 3D-printed Pinarello Bolide time trial bike, too.

But while its history might be deep rooted in the road racing scene, Pinarello is a brand which continues to evolve with the changing demands of the modern bike rider. They’ve recently launched the new Grevil F, a gravel bike focussed on aerodynamics and dedicated to pure performance off-road. They’re also not afraid to make stunning bikes which stand out from the crowd, recently launching the new ‘Electro’ colour options for the Dogma F: stunning and eye-catching tones which stand out from the crowd. Both of these bikes will be on show at Rouleur Live 2022.

Willier

In the striking blue colourway used on the bikes of the Astana-Qazaqstan WorldTour team, Wilier are unmissable in the peloton. Used by previous Giro d’Italia and Tour de France winner, Vincenzo Nibali, in the final year of his illustrious career, Wilier’s Filante SLR is a bike designed to go uphill fast. With a specific focus on stiffness to weight ratio, the Filante SLR aims to strike a balance between being lightweight enough to fly up the hills but aerodynamic enough to hold its own in frantic crosswinds or hectic bunch finishes.

When riders are looking to shave weight in every area possible, the Wilier 0 SLR is another option. An ultra-lightweight racing bike with full cable integration and solid aerodynamic properties, this is the weapon for the cyclist who wants the most technologically advanced bike on offer, with the frameset weighing just 800 grams in a size medium. Wilier isn’t all about just creating lightweight bikes, though, with some exciting and unique new releases in the works that will be debuting at Rouleur Live 2022.

Scott

When Scott launched its new Foil earlier this year, it turned heads in the cycling world as a bike that can do it all: it has significant aero advantages while maintaining an impressively light weight. The versatility of the Foil was shown perhaps most explicitly at the Tour de France this year. Team DSM’s key GC-hopeful and climber Romain Bardet opted to stick with the Foil for the mountain stages of the men’s Tour, while many other teams switched to specific climbing bikes for the alpine stages. Aboard the same machine which helped Bardet float up the mountains, Lorena Wiebes from the women’s side of the squad sprinted to victory on the opening stage of the Tour de France Femmes on the Champs Elysées on her Scott Foil, a testament to the bike’s ability to perform on all terrain.Romain Bardet at the 2022 Tour de France (Image: Zac Williams/SWpix)

Scott also offers the ultra-lightweight Addict RC and various lower-priced road bikes that are comfortable for long distance endurance riding. The Switzerland-based brand dabbles in the gravel, too, with the Scott Addict Gravel taking all the benefits from its road sibling while being optimised for tackling the rougher stuff.

Canyon

Canyon bikes were at the forefront of one of the biggest events of the season as Annemiek van Vleuten took the yellow jersey in the inaugural edition of the Tour de France Femmes aboard her Canyon Aeroad CFR. Van Vleuten rode the bike on both the flat and mountainous stages in the race, proving it is every bit at home on the climbs, despite the focus it has on aerodynamic gains. Canyon//SRAM’s Kasia Niewiadoma finished in third place close behind Van Vleuten also on her Aeroad CFR too. Cyclo-cross and Classics star Mathieu van der Poel also uses the Canyon Aeroad alongside his Alpecin-Deceuninck teammates throughout the season.

Another favourite of the professional riders who use Canyon bikes is the Ultimate: Canyon’s de-facto climbing bike. Canyon launched a new version of the Ultimate just this year with some big upgrades to geometry and carbon lay-up to create a bike which is more of an accomplished all-rounder, rather than just made for the mountains. Canyon is also a big player in mountain biking, gravel and cyclo-cross, with its Inflite cyclo-cross bike and Lux mountain bike winning world championships in the past and its Grizl and Grail gravel bikes frequently topping podiums on the alternative racing scene. Add in the hybrid bikes, e-bikes, downhill bikes, fat bikes and dirt bikes it offers, Canyon is a brand which has something for everyone.

Cervélo

Sponsors of both the men’s and women’s Jumbo-Visma WorldTour squads, Cervélo has its fair share of time at the front of the peloton. Jonas Vingegaard rode the newly-launched Cervélo S5 to a historic victory at this year’s Tour de France, its deeper profiled frame tubes, new fork, increased tyre clearance, lighter weight and aerodynamic advantages making it the perfect choice for the majority of stages. Wout van Aert rode the S5 to victory in the green jersey competition too, edging ahead of some pure sprinters aboard the Cervélo machine in some of the fastest bunch gallops to the line.Jonas Vingegaard wins the 2022 Tour de France (Image: Zac Williams/SWpix)

For the most mountainous stages, Vingegaard and some of his Jumbo-Visma teammates switched to the Cervélo R5, described by Cervélo as a “climbing bike that can also carve a hairpin.” Cervélo also supports Van Aert and Marianne Vos in the cyclo-cross season and created the R5-CX for the off-road superstars. They’ve also recently launched the new ZHT-5, the brand’s first dabble into mountain biking. Cervélo also has the acclaimed Áspero for gravel racing, meaning they cover all bases with top-end machines.

BMC

Swiss brand BMC has been building bikes for some of the biggest talents in the peloton for years. Think Tour de France champion Cadel Evans, Olympic gold medalist Greg van Avermaet or world champions like Pauline Ferrand-Prevot and Philippe Gilbert. Today, they are still prominent in the WorldTour peloton, sponsoring men’s WorldTour Team AG2R Citroën. BMC is famous for its race winning bikes, like the Roadmachine and Teammachine SLR, but it also has an extensive range of off-road options too. These will be available to see at Rouleur Live 2022, but there’s one particularly special bicycle which is going to be at the forefront of the Swiss brand’s display: the Masterpiece.

A handmade frame built from one craftsman from start to finish who meticulously lays each layer of carbon so it lines up perfectly to avoid any overlapping and unnecessary weight, no corners are cut in the creation of the Masterpiece. The bike is so special that only a few of the brand’s sponsored riders have received one: Ben O’Connor was the first recipient after finishing fourth in the 2021 Tour de France and Bob Jungels was awarded one after his impressive solo stage win in this year’s Tour. The Masterpiece will be on show at this year’s Rouleur Live, and, retailing at 12,00 euros, it will likely need its own security guard.

Colnago

Colnago’s V3Rs has been the bike of choice for both UAE Team Emirates and UAE Team ADQ this season, ridden this year by the likes of Tadej Pogačar in the Tour de France and Marta Bastianelli in the Tour de France Femmes. Light and stuff, the V3Rs is built for the demands of a WorldTour team and the bike has been ridden to two Tour victories, two monument wins and almost 100 professional victories so far.

Aside from the V3Rs, the other standout road bike in Colnago’s range is the C68, described as “pinnacle of craftsmanship.” It’s the brand’s superbike which aims to be fast and confident, cutting no corners on the road to high-performance. The C68 was released 68 years after Ernesto Colnago first started making his own frames and is handmade in Italy like all the previous C-series bikes. Colnago also has the G3-X which is a fast gravel bike designed to push hard on the dirt roads. Despite the brand’s constantly innovative attitude, it still features the retro-looking Arabesque and Master bikes as jewels of timeless style. The brand will display some of its flagship models at Rouleur Live 2022.
